Give me a word
Give me a sign
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find
Lay me on the ground
Fly me in the sky
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find
Oh, heaven let your light shine down

One of the difficult issues we encounter when it comes to mental illness is that people have pre-conceived notions about what it means to be mentally ill. Many people automatically jump in their minds to some of the more severe diagnosis such as multiple personality disorder or schizophrenia. They don't realize that there are many branches on the mental illness tree. Collectively we are stigmatized, which, as we have previously discussed on this blog, impedes treatment and shames those who are suffering. Let's take a quick look at just a few of the branches are on that mental illness tree. This list of diagnosis is not complete, and it comes from The DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), the American Psychiatric Association's standard reference for psychiatry, which in fact, includes over 400 different definitions of mental disorders.

The damage drug abuse can do to a mature body is one thing, but for young people who are still growing physically and mentally it is worse. Drug abuse at a young age can alter brain functions, disturb cellular division and have profound effects that may not be visible for many years.
