"woo hoo witchy woman she got
the moon in her eye
She held me spellbound in the night "
The Eagles, Withcy Woman
One of the more recent additions to my doll collection is this yellow character doll (a display doll) ~ Old Mother Witch. This particular doll is really adorable with her yellow taffeta dress. Her "Hollywood" doll company wrist tag is still on, and her face and mohair blond tresses are in fabulous condition.
The Hollywood (maker) dolls that I have seen all have similar faces to my little withcy girl here. She has sleepy eyes, that still work.
To tell the truth, I don't like the Hollywood doll faces as much as the Marcie Doll faces. The Marcie dolls look, oh, sweeter perhaps. These Hollywood doll faces look a little smashed, and startled.
Oh well, the doll as a whole, is quite enchanting. She is only 5" - which is quite small for these little display dolls. Her feet are flat, and she has a little broom attached to her hand, by a ribbon. I know the original dolls had this broom as well, but I am not sure if this broom is stock, or was added later. I suspect this particular broom was added later -as it appears to be made of a pipe cleaner and yarn for the brush at the bottom. Ha!
The Hollywood Doll Manufacturing Company was located in Southern California, and manufactured dolls from 1941 through the 1960's,
There is a tag inside my doll's dress, which reads "7" - but that is it. Neither the wrist tag, nor the tag inside the dress give any indication of her year of production. Needless to say, she is somewhere between 40 - 60 years old. I got her on eBay for $7.00 plus shipping. It looks like most Hollywood dolls in good condition are selling for between $30 and $40, so I did ok on this one. In any case, I am happy to have her.
