For every mountain there is a miracle.- Robert Schuller
Ok, here's what happened:
We returned to the idea of doing a needle biopsy instead of surgical biopsy.
When you do this, the doctor uses an ultrasound to guide their needles toward the mass.
Before they even begin the aspiration procedure (which collects the cells in the mass), they poke you all around the mass and if possible in the mass, to give you an anesthetic much like novacaine at the dentists.
I'd received three shots of the boobie novacaine when the doctor decided to numb the mass itself. When her needle punctured the mass, we could both watch, right there on the ultrasound, as it began to shrink right before our very eyes.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"It's a cyst. It's deflating, or "leaking out," because it's been punctured."
She pulled the needle out and we continued to watch as it almost disappeared.
"What does this mean?"
She smiled when she looked down at me and said:
"Well, first, it means I can't do the needle aspiration because it is so small now. And second, it means that it is benign anyway, as cancer masses are not filled with liquid, they are filled with firm cancer cells."
"Does this mean I am in the all clear?"
"Well, you definitely have fibro-cystic disease, which means you need to come back in three months and we'll check everything again. But as for this mass, you don't need to worry about cancer."
And so, I returned home, and slept the rest of the afternoon and evening, an effect of the anxiety meds I'd taken before the procedure, but a well rested sleep, having had the majority of my concerns for now, lifted off my shoulders.
It's an amazing day, indeed, when miracles appear (or, ha, dissappear) right before your very eyes.
Thank you to everyone who has been thinking good thoughts and praying for me. I truly believe that every wish and prayer came into fruition yesterday.
The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof. -- Barbara Kingsolver
Above is a magazine collage I created when in the hospital last month. It emphasizes the feelings I have of love and hope, support and encouragment - as I move toward the biopsy scheduled for this afternoon.
Thank you all. Planning on posting some boring 'ol benign news, soon!
